Sports & Recreation are key ingredients for family fun. With a climate and natural environment conducive for the natural habitat found along the Western Plains, Alliance and Box Butte County are home to some premier hunting and fishing. Alliance is also home to a premier 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a disc golf course, a rifle club, a motor cross, a premiere outdoor swimming pool, and activities at the rodeo arena.
The Alliance Recreation Center,  ARC, is also an active supporter of recreational activities. They serve over 1700 members each year and unite men, women and children of all ages, races, faiths, backgrounds, abilities and income levels. The ARC strives to serve the community by “Building healthy spirit, mind and body for all.” The facility offers: Cardio/Weight Room; Sauna and Steam Rooms; Locker Rooms; 3 racquetball courts; 2 Walleyball courts; 2 lane indoor walking track; 2 gymnasiums, and a 30 minute Workout Circuit Room.
Programs include: Group Fitness Classes, Youth and Adult Programs and many Community-wide events. They also offer Child Watch during your workout sessions if you call ahead.
Memberships are available for all of today’s modern family types including: Family, Single Parent Family, Single Adult, Youth, Student and Single Senior Citizen as well as Senior Citizen Couples. The YMCA is located at 1202 E. 10th Street in Alliance. For more information, call 308-762-2201.
Laing Lake is a large park located near the north end of Box Butte Avenue. You can enjoy any of the two miles of trails that begin in the park, or you can visit the ducks and geese that make their homes on the lake. Fishing is also available along the shoreline or from the pier located on the north side of the lake.
The Sunken Gardens located in Central Park creates a beautiful garden with seemingly endless varieties of flowers during the summer. Paths wind throughout the Gardens, allowing visitors to see, smell, and enjoy everything around them.
Bask in the sunshine, or relax in the evening lights of the Central Park Fountain, the center of the Alliance Park System. The park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has been a source of community pride and enjoyment since the 1930s. The fountain is in operation from Memorial Day week-end until the first of October each year. After dark, there is a lights and water display that should not be missed.
The City of Alliance Cultural and Leisure Services include the Skyview Golf Course, Big Blue Bay Outdoor Pool, Central Park, Snake Creek Walking Trail, kids fishing lake, disc golf, four ball field areas with 8 fields, 8 tennis courts, neighborhood parks, and Wiggely Field Dog Park. Box Butte Reservoir, approximately 30 miles north of Alliance, is one of the best kept secrets of fishing and boating in Western Nebraska. It provides an ample 1600 acres, fed by the Niobrara River, of boating and fishing pleasure which includes walleye, yellow perch, pike, largemouth and small mouth bass, crappie, bluegill and channel catfish. There are also RV hook-ups with electrical and a swimming area for children, with plenty of camping opportunities.
The Alliance Rifle Club was organized shortly after WWII and has been NRA affiliated since May 26, 1949. The Hoffland Range is an outdoor range with a 1000 yard pit and covered firing line, located 10 miles east of Alliance on Highway 2. The Fiebig Range, located 8 miles east on Highway 2, is open to all members. Shooting matches are offered almost every week-end from April through October.
